Sometimes, opting for the norm can get quite boring, even in as dynamic a place as the design world. That’s why sometimes we like to spice it up, which is exactly what we did with our latest Abstract Moroccan rugs collection where we completely revisioned the traditional Moroccan rug for sale design process. And to celebrate the release of this rotating collection and its unique, hand-dyed, individually-woven pieces by women artisans across cooperatives in Morocco.
The Process of Designing and Creating Handmade Moroccan Rugs in Our New Rug Collection
Normally, when we’re designing our Moroccan rugs, we, as a design team, generally determine the initial designs in-house here at Babakech, and then we send the weavers the final sketch. Their generational expertise enables them to strictly follow the designs, ensuring every detail is faithfully respected. For this particular collection, though, we started by producing a number of designs as samples, checked the quality, and decided that given how beautiful and amazing the weave of these area rugs is, we needed to make a whole collection of one-of-a-kind modern Moroccan rugs to share them with the world. They are woven at a women's cooperative in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
To give the collection a proper fitting, we made the designs, specified the colors and sizes, and sent blueprints to the weavers. We followed this process for the first 6 samples, determining the sizes based on what size would suit a particular design the best. The weavers in return made full-sized rugs for these first batch designs. Some of the designs came out exactly like the designs we provided, while some had some slight variations and interpretations made by the weavers, which came out beautifully.
Since we didn’t have previous experience designing Moroccan rugs, let alone designing an abstract Moroccan rug collection. Before we initiated the collection, we first had to understand how the weavers weave, how the samples look, what the color options are, and finally, the designs that had to be made for the collection. Then, instead of working on just the graphical shapes, we started to work on additional designs with the process in mind -- because we had an idea about what the designs might look like on completed rugs thanks to our skilled artists.
The inspiration behind the designs eventually came from everywhere, from the landscapes and colors of Morocco to Piet Mondrian. The design team had total freedom to play around and come up with the most inspired designs. We started with an initial vision board made for this collection, which provided the general idea we were trying to capture in these designs. We wanted the designs and colors to be playful and to work well with the high piles, which add a lot of movement to the designs.
The women weavers provided us with 25 unique dyed wool pom poms. We then photographed and shared the images with our design team so they could incorporate them into our Moroccan rug for sale collection. These were the colors that can be easily achieved by the weavers by hand-dyeing Moroccan wool. Even though the colors are based on what is already available, they are all hand-dyed by the weavers themselves.
It was a really unique and fantastic experience for us to evolve as a brand with this kind of project, knowing that the designs would be turned into a real product in the Moroccan rug weavers' hands! And it was so exciting to know that the weavers would add their own interpretations and not know what those interpretations would be.
While Abstract Moroccan rugs offer a fresh and artistic take on the renowned Moroccan rug, they’re just one of many gorgeous styles to check out. If you love geometric patterns, checkered Moroccan rugs bring a modern yet checks appeal. For a flatter weave with tribal motifs, Kilim Moroccan rugs are a fantastic choice. And if you're more into pieces with history and character, vintage Moroccan rugs deliver a unique faded charm. Each style has its own beauty, so be sure to check them all!
