Tradition, Reimagined

Tradition, Reimagined

What we do at Babakech isn’t just about designing and creating beautiful rugs; it’s about building meaningful, lasting relationships with the people who weave them. We work exclusively with certified weaving cooperatives that are operated by the artisans themselves. No middlemen, no interference, just direct support for the women at the heart of this tradition. These artisans are not anonymous hands behind a loom; they are mothers, daughters, and most importantly, leaders. They share stories over tea, chant as they knot, and carry centuries of knowledge in every movement.

At Babakech, we believe that with the joy of running a creative, heritage-rooted business comes the responsibility to ensure that the craft thrives, both today and in the future. This means confronting and helping to fix the outdated systems that have too often left weavers at the bottom of the supply chain—underpaid, undervalued, and lacking basic resources and protections.

Since the very beginning, doing the "right thing" wasn’t so much a decision as it was a compass, guiding every step we take toward building an ethical, sustainable business that holds up over time.

Treating women with respect, paying fair, stable salaries, and creating dignified working conditions isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s how we believe this industry will evolve, attract younger generations, and protect a tradition that's too valuable to lose. Because preserving heritage means letting it breathe and grow. We honor the traditional ways while making room for what’s possible, reimagining how this craft fits into a better, more just future.

Beyond the loom, we’re mindful of the everyday challenges that can stand in the way of women pursuing their craft. Through our partnerships with certified cooperatives, we support systems that address real-life needs, like flexible hours and childcare-friendly environments. These aren't luxuries; they're essentials that help make weaving a viable, long-term path.

By working closely with cooperatives that are run by the weavers themselves, we aim to create an environment where this work can fit into their lives, not the other way around. Because when people are supported, they’re empowered to grow—and when they grow, the tradition grows with them.

We want Moroccan rug craft to reach its artistic peak. To do that, we pay homage to the past while also introducing new ideas, new perspectives, and new textures. It’s all in service of reimagining what a Moroccan rug can be: not just a beautiful object, but a meaningful piece that carries history, innovation, and a true sense of place into people's homes.
