We all love us a good storytime, but when it comes to the origins, materials, and motifs of our Moroccan Kilim rugs, we like to tell it like this. If you take a good look at the Moroccan rug for sale Collection, our latest line of flatwoven rugs, you’ll see neutral, silky fibers. In fact, they’re made out of natural wool, and guess what? We think that’s perfectly fine; in fact, the fact that they’re made out of natural materials means that the rugs are more durable, stain-resistant, and retain their bold colors better than many synthetically made rugs. At the same time, though, they’re still handwoven by a coop in Morocco following designs designs made by our in-house team and inspired by local motifs, so the artisanal craftsmanship and collaboration are still very much present.
But first, let’s take a step back. What exactly is a Moroccan Kilim rug supposed to be? Also known for its tribal flatweave design, a Kilim Moroccan rug is traditionally handmade using time-honored techniques passed down through sacred generations. The wool fibers used are separated, dyed, and finally spun into a thread that then gets woven into rugs. These flatwoven rugs are woven entirely by hand, without the use of knots, resulting in a lightweight yet sturdy textile. The weaving process includes tribal symbols and rich colors, making them a staple in Moroccan craftsmanship. Often gets woven into textiles for rugs, pillows, poufs, and more.
For our Moroccan Kilim line, we’ve not only welcomed the storytelling behind the rugs' woman-made roots, but we’re also celebrating the rich history behind its motifs and symbols, which are just as knotted and embellished as that of Kilims. After all, Morocco was colonized as early as the Roman Empire, followed by the Arabs, and most recently the French and Spanish, none of whom cared for the indigenous locals nor their Tamazight languages of native. The Amazigh (Berber) designs were deeply personal, even when they depicted specific tribal customs and beliefs, and the same symbol might have multiple meanings among members of a single tribe or other tribes, making translating and interpreting them a challenging and delicate task. The few published sources that we’ve come across that discuss the meanings behind "Berber" symbols tend to be Westernized interpretations that are difficult if not impossible to verify.
So our Moroccan Kilim rugs might indeed depict one to multiple motifs that do signify a whole story unfold or it might symbolize something different altogether! We can’t be sure, but we do know that the Moroccan Kilims warp and weft are skillfully woven by local members of a women’s coop in Ouarzazat and that the ground of the pattern and materials, embellished by history as they both are, is part of what makes them so beautiful.
Their flat sheen and range of color palettes mean they work in both minimalist and maximalist decor, and thanks to their natural materials, they’re great in high-traffic areas like entryways, or living and dining rooms. But to be honest, we find them to be so divine and masterfully made that we wouldn’t put it past you if you hung them on the wall as art; after all, they’re a story in and of themselves.
While Moroccan Kilim rugs offer a different texture from their other Moroccan rug cousins, they’re just one of many gorgeous styles to check out. If you love geometric patterns, checkered Moroccan rugs bring a modern yet checks appeal. For a modern weave with abstract patterns, abstract Moroccan rugs are another fantastic choice. And if you're more into pieces with history and character, vintage Moroccan rugs deliver a unique faded charm. Each style has its own beauty, so be sure to check them all!
